Background of the Study:
Indigenous storytelling has historically served as a powerful tool for moral education in Esan South East Local Government. Through narratives, parables, and folklore, elders impart wisdom, cultural norms, and ethical values to younger generations (Osagie, 2023). This oral tradition instills social responsibility and a sense of identity, counteracting modern influences that may erode traditional morals (Igho, 2024). Despite the rise of digital media and modern entertainment, indigenous storytelling remains vital for moral development and cultural continuity. This study investigates the effectiveness of storytelling in promoting ethical behavior among youths and examines its potential to counteract the moral ambiguities of contemporary society (Egbe, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Modern influences have led to a decline in indigenous storytelling, which may negatively impact the moral development of youths in Esan South East. The erosion of traditional narrative practices risks diminishing the ethical guidance provided by these stories (Osagie, 2023). This study aims to examine how reduced engagement with indigenous storytelling affects youth morality and to explore ways to revitalize this traditional practice (Igho, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of indigenous storytelling on moral development among youths.
To identify challenges hindering the practice of indigenous storytelling.
To recommend strategies for revitalizing indigenous storytelling among youths.
Research Questions:
How does indigenous storytelling influence moral development among youths?
What challenges contribute to the decline of traditional storytelling practices?
What measures can promote the resurgence of indigenous storytelling for moral education?
Research Hypotheses:
Indigenous storytelling positively influences moral development among youths.
The decline in traditional storytelling correlates with reduced moral guidance.
Revitalization initiatives can enhance the role of indigenous storytelling in moral education.
Significance of the Study:
This study highlights the importance of indigenous storytelling in shaping ethical values among youths. Its findings will inform educational and cultural policies aimed at integrating traditional narratives into youth development programs, ensuring moral continuity (Osagie, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to Esan South East Local Government, Edo State, focusing solely on the effect of indigenous storytelling on moral development among youths. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the influence of modern media.
Definitions of Terms:
Indigenous Storytelling: The oral tradition of narrating folklore and cultural tales.
